ABOUT BINOY VARAKIL

Binoy Varakil is an Indian author, lecturer, film producer, and director. He is a prolific and versatile writer in both English and Malayalam, the native language of the South Indian state of Kerala. He has received more than seven international awards for his contributions to literature and cinema. Slaves of the Empire (2024), a documentary film he produced, was awarded Best Documentary at the UK Asian Film Festival in London in May 2025. He also serves as the Associate Director and Producer of She Muscle, a documentary on female bodybuilders.

Binoy Varakil was born in Thottumukkam, Kozhikode, Kerala, India. He has been an Assistant Professor of English at St. Joseph's College Devagiri, Kozhikode, since 1998. The Company Commander of the NCC Army unit of the college, Captain Binoy Varakil was commissioned into the NCC in 2010. He writes in English and Malayalam. 

He has received the Abraham Lincoln Excellence Award for the novel Mountains, Rivers and Soldiers in 2020. The Lipi Pravasalokam Sahithya Award was given to his novel Vishudha Kelan in 2019. He won the special jury award in Shakespeare As You Like It International Poetry Contest in 2016. He started writing at the age of twelve.

His first published poem is Great Ones [1993]. He has contributed sixteen books to the genres of poetry, short story and novel. His seventeenth book, Mulankattile Dheivam a dalit novel in Malayalam, is published by Mathrubhumi Books in December 2020. It is available online in Mathrubhumi Books.
